Inspiration market/arab style buildings_modelling

I've decided i need to boraden some skills to make myself hirable....so for the term i have decided to do some enviroment modelling this way i am getting some of the prep work out of the way so i can focus purely on animation for next year.

Just a few pictures of what im looking for in the market scene. Lots and lots of details and ill be taking this into account when i build the model. I wanted to make a market that looked beautiful...with the use of plain colours we are not going through the high detail realistic look that was decided early on, when you see the animatic you will understand that the realistic look wouldnt work .
I believe ill be looking at http://www.blueskystudios.com/content/process.php for when it comes down to texturing however i will be making mine look maybe a little more cartoon like however nothing is for certain and it will be something that will require test on what looks good when the time comes.

arab style buildings

I have decided to make the opening scene a mixture of arab styled buildings and a small market scene which we shall have the character running in.

What ive noticed
Looking at the architecture ive noticed alot of the buildings have a very simple structure alot being square with a few windows, and a few patterns on the edge the roofs, now with the set i want to build being for a cartoon like short this is perfect for me. Yes i want to make the enviroment look beautiful and that can be done without having to go for the realistic look. The images above back up my claims about the atchitecture.

Character designs

Character designs

Now as for this thief i had so much trying to make a character who looked appealing and one i believe i could have a great amount of fun working with when it came down to the animation. But i am happy with what i have the character looks fun, not to serious and i believe it can lok even better when it has been modified and applied into maya for the building stage.

I wanted the bounty hunter to be a big character looks a bit like a guard/viking but when he's been modified i believe i can have alot of fun customising this cha

a few different looks for the mime till i was happy with a certain look...as you can see i did a few varietions of widths for his head i was happy with a thin long head in the end.Just looked alot better then having a thick head.

you can see my character dsigns for the animated short that im working on. I cant say when it could possibly be completed this is due to the fact i need a team to help with this the tasks are too much for one person to work on. the characters will be something like this my storyboards are being polished and played around with and within the week i should have a animatic on here.

I did say i would have a animatic and its done but currently just adding a few basic sounds...its basic stick man run, theres and alot of tweening at least i have a good idea of what needs to be changed slightly concerned its 3 mins long now and im well aware its prob gonna be 4 when its done....its a challenge i like the idea of working on.

Characters

My character were shown to my tutor who gave me some feedback, the character do not belong in the same world...and need more appeal so ive decided i have time to work on that towards a later stage, its not exactly a strenght so i may look into a character artist to help with this. But i still am going to prioritise getting the first set built, and the opening shot textured.

Story/ team required

My short consists of 3 characters a thief, a bounty hunter, and a mime...these characters are all in development when i get the time i will modify these and hopefully get them into maya and then have them rigged.

Of course since im only building the opening set there is no need for me to worry too much about the team just yet, i just want to get some of the preporation work done, this is due to the fact i want to spend as much time animating as possible.

Story
I wanted to make a story in which the main character was a wanted man being chased. (Tom and Jerry)- (road runner and wile e coyote) are good examples of one's that work. We have a thief being chased by a bounty hunter....all over the world till we meet a mime who accidentally gets involved. Ill have 2 enviroments one will be a very large market enviroment (detail is everything to me, signs pots, dust, rubble, a real beatiful piece of work...most likly using alot of plain colours but it does work if done well ill have to find the right mix in the near future.) The second enviroment is when the chase has lead towards where we have our final character, THE MIME sorry to go with the clichea but i thought we would have a beautiful French enviroment the architechture has to be considered as well with the change of location....alot of research into there buildings the colours, the feel alot has to be taken into consideration. Dramatic, entertainment, humour, visually beatuiful, and more entertainment are all stuff i want it has to have appeal.
Team required
A animator x2, character modellor, technical director/VFX,Concept artist, Modellor. I do intend to do the enviroment modelling as well as some of the animation work....and making sure that everything that is being done is done right and that we dont lose any appeal when it comes down to the work.

Career intentions
To become a director of animated feature films in world renowned studio such as DreamWorks-Disney, I will have to take careful consideration of the route my career will take. I will start off my career in the industry of animation by being an animator. By doing so, I will gain first-hand experience of the role of the animator and develop my skills. I will then be more suitable to the job role as director in the future as I will have developed my career and skills which will make me a successful and competent director.
Skills needed
The skills that I require in order to achieve this career when I graduate are being able to visualise and create storyboards so that my ideas can be created by a team. I must be able to create story’s that entertain an audience and then be able to produce them.
Software used
Maya is the software that I need to understand and use.  I will be able to work well with camera settings in the programme, and also learn how to animate in the programme. Therefore, I am able to work on the shorts that I visualise on my own 30secs-1min till I can get people to work on them with me for larger projects. Therefore I will need to know the software itself very well, to understand how it works and what goes into making a short and therefore I’ll have the knowledge and the understanding of what team members do, if I would be doing longer shorts.
Hardware used
Hardware that is required for me to get this all done would be a top of the range computer which will enable me to work with the top of the range graphics. This will enable me to produce high end renders which will allow me to produce quality images which will enable me to have work which looks good on the screen. Also the more powerful my computer is the quicker I will be able to work because it will be able to handle Maya (crashed a lot on my laptop) since on a powerful piece of equipment it will be able to handle high detailed scenes.
Production pipeline for demo reel
My job in the production pipeline would mean I would be in charge of the final decisions and making sure that everything in the scene is in the correct position; that the animation submitted is good enough. The higher position in the production pipeline, the more responsibility that person would have. Therefore, that is why I wish to be a director as I'll be able to thrive upon that responsibility. However, since I am doing shorts here, for my demo reel I will have a series of shorts to show that I’m able to come up with ideas that show I have the creative mind to develop my own story that entertains an audience, but I will also be able to show that I am able to animate in a way which entertains, so I will be able to apply for the animation roles. With the shorts being my own work and ideas, I have full responsibility of the creative output.  The list below is of the production pipeline I would have to overview when setting myself a project.

Maya skills and tricks

Well ill be updating this again shortly but first im gonna show you a quick trick using the cloth tool
its quick and easy to have a realistic cloth effect best used for rugs clothes etc,
as you can see below it looks quite effective and is a real time saver compared to trying t make that item do it by simply moving polygons around

Concept work

few drawings for the short ive got planned, with the 3 characters a old man a house wife and a fly.
Must apologize for the poor scanned images

the layout plan for the room in which my scene would take place i thought it would be best to only have the one room that way i didnt have to worry about over complicating a simple story line.
A wife finished with the cleaning is about to take a well desearved rest, just as she is to close her eyes and rest she hears a buzzzzzzzz noise and it keeps coming till she flips. She chases the fly arounds the house with her destroying everything in her path, while the husband sits and reads his paper.

taking the concept art i can make the layout in the plans above really quickly done just to have the walls around so i can work on the props to give the layout the life it needs to work.
Demo reels
What i need for when i graduate is to have a strong portfolio this will be done by having a series of short showing different styles and techniques, more importantly that i can produce shorts that entertain. Need to have shorts that are shown in festivals in order to build a reputation in which i can get work that way.

Change of plan
Since we are working on stuff that we would do for the 3rd year i have decided that for my best interest to completly change the story and go for somethin g long since ill have alot more time to work upon it for the next year. So this work above most likly will be done over the summer when ive got the time available (internet recruitment drive). So head to the 3rd year plan to see the stuff that im currently working upon, sadly with the time scale available i would not be able to work on this the way i would like....working on the models, textures, effects, characters, rigging and all that....pretty much ive set myself way too much to do so for my best interest im gonna put this project to the side and carry on working on my possible 3rd year project. This is mainly due to the fact i would need a team in order to get the work done as quickly as possible.

Monday maya lessons

I was meant to do a blog for monday lessons saying what ive done in my maya lessons.
First of all we were given a character in different perspectives
We had to then take that charcter and make him in maya.
As you can see below with a decent reference you can easily create a character sticking to the orginal design. Personally i think its not too bad for a first attempt at character design.

When this guy was finally done it was time to work on a human skull, im really not much of a modeller, enviroments yes because i find theres alot more freedom with the objects and everything your making, but character modelling must be very precise. Its not finished its a work in progress using a skull model as reference.

I have a few models which show the development of the face and the improvments that had been made throughtout sadly though there is still a great amount of work left to do on this model.

using a detailed version of a hand as reference i am able to model over it to create not a maybe not a detailed version but a cartoon version a hand to work upon.

A couple of pictures of the hands that have been modeled, im gonna be the first to admit character modelling is not for me.

a few models of the updated hand which im pleased with this is due to there being significant improvement on the first on, obviously im gonna have to come back and improve the design when i get the time
